Boulder County Commercial Energy Efficiency Assistance Programs

City of Boulder, Boulder County and Longmont have collaborated to design, pilot and implement energy efficiency services throughout the County. For services that may be free, low cost or rebated, visit Boulder County Energy Efficiency Pilot or call 877-505-6722.

Green building is the practice of increasing the efficiency with which buildings use resources - energy, water and materials - while reducing building impacts on human health and the environment during the building's lifecycle - design, construction, operation, maintenance and removal.

In the United States, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), buildings account for:

  • 39% of total energy use
  • 12% of total water consumption
  • 68% of total electricity consumption
  • 38% of carbon dioxide emissions (GHG)

Buildings in Boulder County are responsible for 54% of our GHG emissions and the commercial sectors account for 29% of those emissions.

Important Considerations for Business Owners

There is a growing interest today on the part of building owners, facilities managers, architects, engineers, and others in the construction industry to design and construct commercial structures to get the most out of the least.

With the extensive local, state, utility, and national incentives & rebates in place, the return on investment and paybacks have never looked so good.

The business case for green buildings addresses many issues already of concern to businesses:

  • marketing,
  • government relations
  • employee relations

Most people look only at the economic benefit of savings on energy costs, neglecting the mounting evidence that green buildings also:
  • return higher rents & offer faster letting
  • secure greater occupancy and generate higher resale value
  • offer higher quality at modest additional cost
  • offer greater public relations and marketing benefits
  • assistance with stakeholder relations
  • provide a positive story to tell to employees of development firms, thereby aiding in recruiting and retaining key employees

SmartRegs adopted!  SmartRegs was unanimously approved after more than a year of collaboration with various community and technically-based subcommittees, city advisory boards and residents.  The proposed implementation date is Jan. 3, 2011, with an energy efficiency compliance date of Jan. 2, 2019 for all rental properties in the City of Boulder.
