Applying the Triple Bottom Line to Commercial
Real Estate
People from all walks of life are waking up and
recognizing that good business requires vibrant, functional communities
and healthy ecosystems. For those interested in sustainability, a term
that is making its way into business lexicon, is “TripleBottomLine” or
"3BL" for short. This expression was coined by John Elkington,
co-founder of the business consultancy, SustainAbility. As this term,
“TripleBottomLine”, suggests there are three measure of success:
economic prosperity, social fairness, and ecological health. Green
building practitioners, as shapers of the built-environment have a
unique opportunity to implement 3BL. Furthermore, being fluent in 3BL
will helps us in persuading our clients to look beyond monolithic
measures such as Payback Period, ROI and IRR. The TripleBottomLine
utilizes three lenses through which to view an investment. This talk
addresses the unified application of these three values.
