    Tuesday Evenings

The Green Building Certificate Program provides comprehensive and practical knowledge for sustainable building design within the context of LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), the nationwide rating system of the U.S. Green Building Council. Each week the course is taught by different industry experts who share their cutting-edge knowledge about topics ranging from sustainable sites to building commissioning.

As an accelerated evening program, this 12-week course was created to fulfill the growing need for specially trained professionals who are able to adapt to a changing industry and culture. The course typically attracts working professionals who need critical knowledge about emerging green building practices in commercial building, and who wish to enhance their careers. Many of our students go on to take the LEED® Green Associate exam after completing the course.

Individuals from the following professions tend to benefit the most from the program:

    • Roche Colorado 2075 North 55th Street, Boulder, CO 80301
America's car-oriented culture has caused our cities to explode outward in suburban sprawl that now poses huge sustainability challenges. Given the general lack of public transportation, as the price of oil has risen (and few doubt that it will continue to rise inexorably in the coming decades), the cost of getting around in our cities has become a major burden on our economy, not to mention the carbon emissions associated with the billions of miles we drive every year commuting, shopping and……well, just living!

While metro Denver suffers from many of these sustainability challenges, there's lots going on in our region to suggest that we can expect some significant reductions in the cost of getting around in the future as well as major improvements in the quality of life in our urban environment. Please join us on Wednesday, September 15 at the Roche Colorado facility to hear from the following experts discussing some of the ways in which we're making city living a better experience.

Bill Sirois, Manager, Transport Oriented Development, RTD: will present the latest initiatives to create sustainable living communities around the increasing number of RTD Fastracks stations across the metro area.

Donna Dailey, Telework Coordinator, Transport Planning & Operations, DRCOG: will show us how a well-managed telecommuting initiative can save companies significant amounts of money, improve employee morale and loyalty, and eliminate millions of commuter miles, reducing gasoline consumption and carbon emissions in the process.

Parry Burnap, Executive Director, Denver Bike Sharing: will bring us up to date on Denver's revolutionary (for the US at least) effort to reduce car usage by making bicycles available inexpensively for short trips inside the city.

EPA regulations REQUIRE that all contractors performing work on pre-1978 dwellings and disturbing just 2 square feet of work area per room MUST be certified through this course offering!

On Wednesday, September 22, there will be a one-day only training seminar in Denver on lead-safe work practices when remodeling, painting or performing maintenance on residences built prior to 1978.  Lead-Based Paint Remediation was developed in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and complies with that organization's Renovation, Repair, and Painting rule.

Every time the surface of lead-based paint is disturbed, a lead paint hazard is created.  Fortunately, there are simple and straightforward techniques that contractors can use to reduce that hazard when remodeling.

To download a copy of the registration form for this seminar, please click here.  After completing the form, return it to IEC by fax to 303-853-4909 or email at annette@iecrm.org.  Class is limited to the first 20 registrants, so don't delay!

    Cost:
    IEC Members: $250
    Non-Members: $290
50% of course tuition is due  at the time of registration

This may be your LAST OPPORTUNITY to become certified before the EPA

Energy Use in Green Retrofits vs. Conventional Homes
(A Solar Homes Tour Preview and last of the BOSS Series)

    About BOSS
Boulder onsite seminars are events designed to give you a unique educational experience.  In association with the Center for ReSource Conservation, BGBG  will offer a lecture on building science, followed by a tour of a home to illustrate the instructional points from the lecture.
Gourmet dinner provided by Sublime Catering is included!

Description: How do conventional homes use energy? How can green homes and green retrofits reduce typical energy use, enhance comfort, improve air quality, improve safety, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions? How do these technologies affect homeowners' expenses (mortgage + utility costs)?

Please join our expert panel as they explain building science, in simple terms that all homeowners can understand. You will learn how building components and systems interact, where energy is used (and typically wasted), and how you can economically address these issues. There will also be discussions about City and County building codes and the coming SmartRegs policies for rental properties.

After the lecture, all attendees will walk over to a nearby home and see the applications of building science. You will better be able to understand what to look for when touring homes on the Boulder County Solar & Green Homes Tour. (Sunday Sept 26, 2010)

Note to our Green Building Professionals: Please keep in mind that this event is a bit different from our other seminars in that it is designed for the general public.

Now that you’ve seen the green homes on the tour, please join us to learn how you can take advantage of the latest subsidized programs and incentives.  The County of Boulder has received federal funds to expand both the scope of services and the number of homes served by the Residential Energy Action Program (REAP, currently managed by the Center for Resource Conservation).  This yet to be named next generation program will provide as many as 18,000 single family homes, condos, and apartments with energy audits, customized energy and financial modeling, rebates, and consulting to reduce energy use.  Learn how this program works in conjunction with other city and county programs and how this process will give you an actionable plan for your own home.  There have never been so many incentives on the table for Boulder County homeowners to save energy (and money).  Find out how you can get your share.

    Speaker Bio:

Brad Queen is the Energy Division Director at the Center for Resource Conservation.  Brad holds a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and has performed graduate work in building energy systems, energy policy, power electronics, power generation, and renewable energy systems.  He helped develop the energy use and emissions model for the University of Colorado's carbon neutrality plan.

The International Conference on Energy, Logistics and the Environment (www.globalcommerceforum.org) to be held at the Grand Hyatt Hotel Denver from October 8-9, 2010 attracts scholars, researchers, school administrators, facilities managers and senior executives from diverse industries and sectors worldwide.

Attendees learn more about the sustainability tools, research, best practices, energy policies, financing and commercializing green technology, and the tools that they can immediately apply to their work environment to be more competitive.  Sustainability case studies from people who are doing it are presented and the participants get to listen to the experts discuss the current and future needs of the "sustainability" industry and how colleges can help create more adept leaders to resolve these needs. Though the concept of sustainability has permeated higher learning, colleges and universities are still behind in implementing sustainability practices both in their surroundings and their  curricula save for a few.  It is therefore important that the business community, the not for profit organizations, government entities and institutions of higher learning come together to identify the current and future needs of executives from diverse sectors and identify what higher learning institutions can do in terms of research, content,  curricula, pedagogy and partnerships/collaboration with other sectors to ensure that the graduates are equipped with the necessary knowledge, expertise and tools to assume leadership roles in this fast changing field.   Even more important, attendees will have the opportunity to partner or collaborate with the academia in solving business problems.  Researchers will be able to use the business issues presented as the basis for developing research that will resolve business problems.

Currently we have available a limited number of discount registrations made available made through our collaborating partners CORE at $250 instead of the regular $425. Follw the link below: http://globalcommerceforum.org/?q=node/22   You may need to cut and paste the link in your browser.

Realtors, appraisers, brokers, finance officers and the building community should attend this brown bag talk to find out about the first Colorado MLS system to add prominent, searchable green fields and why this is so important for the future of their industry.

Learn about the state-wide initiative, spearheaded by the  Appraisal Committee of the Governor’s Energy Office, to ensure that all 18 MLS organizations in Colorado join in to provide the real estate industry with tangible data that appraisers can rely on to assist them in determining value.

The lack of quantifiable green data points has created a challenge to appraisers who are trying to determine if green/energy efficient or sustainable features add value to a property.  Without the quantifiable green data points the appraiser lacks the ability to abstract the green/energy efficient/sustainable value from the market to compare it against other similar properties or properties without any energy features. In turn, this makes it less likely that those providing the financing for a purchase can incorporate the value of those green features. At the same time, a lack of good data also poses challenges to Realtors, home buyers and sellers who wish to take advantage of and/or leverage the value of energy efficiency measures that a home or building has incorporated.
Don’t miss this overview of the process that was used to identify the green features adopted, why they are important, what’s coming, and how this information will be useful for those in the real estate and building industry.
Feel free to bring your lunch!

Current green building standards feature indoor health recommendations, but is this content stringent enough to promote the optimal health and well-being of occupants?  Many environmental health professionals are concerned that some green building strategies may lead to similar unhealthy indoor conditions as those that resulted from the 1970s Energy Crisis.  It has become apparent that focusing on ventilation, mold mitigation and low-emitting materials is not enough.  Shelley will discuss green building strategies that are health-promoting as well as those that may be detrimental to occupant health.  The discussion will highlight the need for collaboration among green building, environmental health, building science and construction professionals throughout the lifecycle of buildings.  An interdisciplinary approach that crosses multiple disciplines is the best way to ensure regenerative conditions for both the planet and its occupants.

    Speaker(s):
Shelley Kawamura, LEED AP,  Director of Outreach & Education for the Institute for the Built Environment (IBE) at Colorado State University
Shelley is an occupant health and well-being consultant for both commercial and residential projects.  Shelley has a master’s degree in construction management with a sustainable building emphasis.  As the subject of her thesis, Shelley evaluated the occupant health content of several national green building standards and rating systems and prepared recommendations for building strategies that promote and protect the health of occupants.  The dual goal of environmental preservation and human health within green building programs is the focus of Shelley’s work and she is particularly interested in areas where best practice recommendations for these two objectives are misaligned.  Shelley has presented at many local and national conferences and workshops and brings over twenty years of design expertise and project management to her career focus.
