SAVE THE DATE: JUNE 16, 2012

The Boulder Green Building Guild (BGBG) is thrilled to accept entries for the First Annual Boulder Green Playhouse Design Competition and Auction on June 16, 2012 at Growing Gardens' Hawthorne Community Garden in North Boulder.

The auction will raise money to support Growing Gardens' Children's Peace Garden Program and the BGBG's mission to make green building common practice.

Our goal is to help our community nonprofits, give well-deserved exposure to our creative and talented green building professionals, and educate all age groups about how green buildings can truly delight their inhabitants and make the world a better place.

We look forward to your participation!

Awards

A panel of three judges will vote on winners of the Competition. The Jurists will be announced soon. First, Second and Third place winners of the Competition will receive certificates. All participants will be featured on the BGBG and Growing Gardens websites, social networking sites, and various local and national publications; winners will of course be highlighted. Winners will also be featured on dwell.com. In addition, there will be a Kids' Choice Award: all attending children under 10 will vote for their favorite playhouse.

Competition Details

  • Your entry, first and foremost, should delight children (and adults!).
  • Life-size play structure entries must be large enough for children to play in but may not be larger than 6' x 6' x 8' (height), measured from the exterior of the structure.
  • Entries should be constructed creatively and from green materials. We do not expect these playhouses to necessarily have insulation or glass windows, therefore, the green criteria for this contest are focused on materials. We are working on partnerships with ReSource and Building Surplus to provide discounts on green materials for the purpose of this project.
  • Entries must be durable enough to withstand setup, transport, and the wear and tear of display.
  • Entries should be constructed for outdoor use.
  • Participating teams are responsible for the transportation of playhouses to Growing Gardens Hawthorne Community Gardens on June 16th by 10AM and to auction winners' homes in Boulder County. If an auction winner is out-of-state, s/he will be responsible for shipping costs.
  • Consider sponsors for your playhouses! Many window, roofing, flooring, solar, etc. companies would be thrilled to support this form of education in exchange for recognition (e.g., a permanent plaque on your structure).

Judging Criteria

  • Entries will be judged on the team's creativity in teaching people about environmental concepts and/or natural living. Entries do not have to represent a real house but should inspire people to embrace green design principles. The completed entry should teach children and adults about the benefits of green homes, and inspire them to do something now to make their homes a little greener.
  • A project statement must accompany each entry and should describe in detail any recycled materials used and the concepts and topics addressed. Teams may also include cost and budget information, instructions for set-up and care, or other information that may assist the judges and event attendees in understanding and evaluating the project. Each project statement should be sufficient to explain your entry to attendees and encourage them to vote for your team's entry as the winner.
  • Creativity, inventiveness, and playfulness are key features.

Judges

Danica Powell has been thinking about playhouse design and culture since she inhabited her first custom playhouse built by her father and grandaddy when she was 5 years old. Educated at UC Berkeley with a self-designed major in “Sustainable Urban Systems”, Danica has worked as an urban planner and project manager on a range of redevelopment and master planning projects in both California and Colorado.  As a mom of two young children Westy (4) and Lina (1), she has been daydreaming about the design of their first green playhouse since pregnancy. In her spare time, Danica serves on the City of Boulder Planning Board, volunteers with ULI, and cultivates a variety of sustainable initiatives for her family and friends.

2 more Judges to be announced soon!
